    In March 2011, peaceful protests were held in Syria after fifteen boys had been detained and tortured for their support of the Arab Spring movement. Uprisings happening in Tunisia and Egypt being able to overthrow dictatorial governments had inspired Syrian protesters and encouraged them to demand a better future. However, Bachar al-Assad’s violent repression led the country into a civil war which is still destroying Syria ten years later.
