La séance a surtout été un entraînement au CV (English) ou Résumé (American), avec des polycopiés que je ne peux pas mettre en ligne, mais quelques remarques pourraient vous intéresser…

American résumé and British CV

  • Résumé (US)

? No personal info only : You must not give any personal information. Pay attention to what they ask for. No picture for example, no nationality, no gender, no age. Name Address Phone E-mail

? Lenght : 1 page

Only use fragmented sentences with the verb in the preterit « worked as sales assistant, sold product, etc »

? Bac = high school diploma

BA, BS = 4 years

? American English Pay attention to the differences. Theater Color Organize

? Paper size 8 ½ x 11 inches

  • CV (UK)

? Some personal info : No picture. Name Address Phone E-mail

? Lenght : 1 or 2 pages

Because you have two pages, you can go more into details. « I worked as a sales assistant at the store helping customers with ur star product, etc »

? Bac = A levels

BA, BS = 3 years

? British English Theatre Colour Organise

You are going to send yourself. What qualities ? ? clear ? concise American résumé : no more than one page, whereas British can be two pages. Time taken to read : 30 seconds. ? appropriate for the job / costumized (taillé sur mesure). ? it should be structured, immediatly recognized as a résumé (not a letter or anything) ? personal / attractive

examples of CVs

? very objective information : at the top of the résumé
? don´t give two e-mail addresses, it´s too much
? languages at the bottom, and work experience at the top
? reversed logical order
? caution : economical / economic
? « baccalauréat (equivalent to high school diploma/ A level) »
? classe préparatoire = « prep school »
? « specialized in… »
? the extra « curricula » must not be bigger than the « work experience ». you can make a short and concise list for example, and lenghten the « work and associated experience ».
? must be concise, but not empty. You have to develop somehow. (generally, you have to adapt your CV to your own experience).
? but not too much information, not to block the reader
? you have to keep it on one page.
? British CV : date of birth and driver´s licence at the bottom
? you can mix language skills and other skills to gain space, but there´s a risk language skills will not be highlighted.
? try to use action words in preterit, showing you are an active person. English is a verb based language. ? obtaiened, achieved, performed, worked as… etc.
