You really have no conclusion to all of this. Citing century old adages certainly show you know how to use google, but the fact of the matter is that France is increasingly leftist (just look at the political leaning of most Sciences Po students) and there are more and more Starbucks. Rather than accept the American influence, you reject it; I see no reason why you should be on the defensive when answering your friends' "snide" comments. It's quite easy to be American in Paris, especially at Sciences Po. I will accept that France has given a lot to this world and I do love this country much more than any god-fearing American should, but going back over a century to find reasons why we should have more humility is patently unfair. Being an American should not be different from being of any other nationality. Patriotism is indeed not insisting the US is the best, but it does not mean France is the model.
